Now is the time to begin daydreaming about your picturesque lawn and garden. Can’t you almost taste those fresh homegrown tomatoes and are you dreaming of what your landscaping will look like once everything is in bloom? Do you want to ensure success this year? Do you want to do this for very little money?

The solution you’re looking for, is to start composting.

You may have heard of composting before. It’s great for the environment, saves fruit and veggie waste from ending up in landfills, and creates incredibly nutrient dense soil that will support your gardening and landscaping dreams this year.

  1. Start with the Setup: Find a spot where you can easily deposit your yard and food waste into a compost bin. We love this bin for a great beginner setup. Keep some brown materials nearby, such as leaves or lawn clippings. These are an important part of your composting journey. A pitchfork is a helpful tool for turning your compost. We highly recommend having one nearby.

  2. Save Scraps: A kitchen bin is an important part of your composting process. This bin is attractive and even comes in colors to match your decor! The carbon filter will ensure that any stink is contained within the bin each until you can dump scraps each week.

  3. Begin Your Mix: A base layer of browns, things like leaves, are a good place to begin your composting process. Add in your scraps and more brown items to help the process. Then let nature do it’s work!

  4. Ready to Speed Things Up? The answer is WORMS! Yep, worms will help to enrich your compost and speed up the process. Don’t worry. You won’t have to dig these up. You can buy them online!

  5. Wait for the Magic: Plan to mix your composting mix weekly within the first few weeks. This, along with moisture control, will help ensure success. The other factor is simply time. You can only do so much to speed up your composting. In 10-12 weeks, you can use your finished compost. While the waiting is the hardest part, the rewards are unbeatable.
