Here's How To Lower Your Home’s Heating Bill This Fall And Winter

With the cooler air of fall here, and winter not far behind, it may be time to turn on the furnace.  On the bright side, meteorologists are predicting that the winter weather ahead will be milder than the frigid temperatures we experienced last year.  Heating your home during the fall and winter months can be costly. Now is the ideal time to make your Oklahoma home more energy efficient, and reduce your heating bill at the same time.

Here is a great list of things you can easily do around your home to reduce your heating costs this fall and winter.

Windows & Doors- Warm air can easily escape your home, and cold air will quickly find its way in your home if your doors and windows do not have a good seal. Check the caulk around your windows to see if it is cracked and needs to be replaced. When looking at the door to your home. if you see light coming in around the edges it is time to replace your weather-stripping.  If your windows and doors are on the older side, adding storm windows and doors will help insulate, preventing cooler air from finding its way into your home. A properly insulated window and door will drastically help maintain the temperature in your home.

Fireplace- Inspect your fireplace for soot buildup and check to ensure that your flue is able to close all the way. You do not want to feel air coming in with the flue closed. Adding glass doors to your fireplace is another way to keep colder air from entering your home.

Insulation- The insulation inside your home will slowly deteriorate over time.  Take a look in your attic to determine the condition of your insulation and add some additional insulation if needed.

Thermostat- Invest in a programmable thermostat which will allow you to control the temperature of your home more efficiently. Newer model thermostats have the capability of learning your family’s habits and will adjust themselves accordingly to keep your home cooler when no one is home and warmer when occupied.

Water Heater-  To keep your hot water tank from easily losing heat, consider covering it with a water heater blanket, which on average costs $20 and can be purchased at many local hardware stores. To increase your savings even more, decrease the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees.
