Holiday Hacks for Saving on Decor

Holiday expenses can multiply as the season progresses. If you’re looking for one way to cut back, holiday decor can be a helpful place to save some cash.
These tips and hacks will make it simple to cut the holiday decor spending and make your home still feel festive and fun!
Grab Free Clippings- If you’re buying a live tree, you can ask for free clippings at the tree lot. (Even the big hardware chains usually have a box of clippings.) These clippings can be made into wreaths, garlands, or as floral arrangements throughout the season.
Use Holiday Cards as Decor- Tape a piece of wide holiday ribbon that loops over the top and bottom of your kitchen cabinets. Then attach holiday cards to the ribbon as you receive them throughout the season. These will double as decor on the cheap!
Use Fabric for a Variety of Decor Possibilities- Fabric can be found at places like Walmart for low prices! Red and green plaids, solid colors, and fun stripes can be used in tons of different ways. Spread out a length as a tablecloth or runner, make large bows for a fraction of the cost of ribbon, and leftover bits of fabric can even be used in frames as artwork!
Never Underestimate The Power of Spray Paint- Spraying items in metallic spray paint can make for high end decor. If you have an old set of nutcrackers that look tired, remove any hair and spray them in a solid color. This will immediately upgrade them! The same goes for ornaments that no longer match your aesthetic. This is a great way to upcycle what you have!
The Dollar Store is Your Best Friend- Dollar stores and discount stores are great places to find amazing deals. The trick is to make sure that you’re using a discerning eye. Don’t grab just anything that appeals to you. Mix high-end with low-end products for a chic look. Also, don’t be afraid to modify things. If an ornament has a cheap looking ribbon, tear it off and replace it with something else. Think about ways to make these items your own.
Inexpensive Ribbon is Festive and Fun- The dollar store is a great place to find festive ribbon for great prices. Ribbon can add bulk to a tree, a large bow can decorate outdoor spaces, and wrapping ribbon around things like candle jars or indoor plants can add a festive touch.
Baked Ornaments and Decor Won’t Cost a Fortune- Salt dough ornaments and cinnamon ornaments are easy and quick. Plus, they’re a cute way to get the kids involved this year. Use some paint, glue, and glitter to make these into special keepsakes and gifts for grandparents!
Solid Color Decor Will Work for Other Seasons- Red and green look great in plenty of other seasons. Consider buying a red platter instead of a specifically Christmas platter. It can be used again for Valentine’s Day or the 4th of July. The same goes for solid green items. Use them again in spring, for St. Patrick’s Day, or for the fall! Solid colored items give you the most bang for your buck!
Think Second Hand- Your local thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are both useful for finding bargains on used decor pieces. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy the thrill of the hunt?
Stock Up on Replacement Bulbs- New lights are one of those holiday expenses that can add up. If your holiday lights are burnt out in a few places, consider ordering a pack of replacement bulbs to restore the strand to working order once again. This small investment will save you tons!
