Make Your Home Instagram Worthy With These 7 Houseplants
Look at the hashtags #PlantMom or #Succulent and you’re likely to find hundreds of thousands of posts about the internet’s latest obsession, the houseplant. The care and keeping of gorgeous green family members is the latest trend to hit Instagram and is more Joanna Gaines than Grandma Jo. From air plants, to succulents, to the finicky and aptly named fiddle leaf fig, adding a little greenery to your space is the hottest trend in the lifestyle and design world.
A great rule of thumb when decorating has always been to add one more living thing than humans and animals. If you have 2 humans and a dog, add 4 (pet-safe) plants to your space. Plants help purify the air, add texture to your space, bring in a living element, and add a pop of natural color that goes with most any décor.
If you’ve been wanting to get into the wild world of houseplants, you have come to the right place. Check out these 10 plants that will add just the right thing to your space, and get you one step closer to the Instagram worthy space you dream of living in.
Fiddle Leaf Fig- While this tree has a reputation for being a bit persnickety and difficult, if you have a green thumb you can make this plant thrive. Designers love this plant for its height and beautiful green leaves. It loves bright consistent lighting, a warm climate, and water only when it’s feeling dry.
Jade Plant- These are adorable succulents that have the nickname “money plant.” The Jade plant needs 4+ hours of sunlight each day and requires moist soil while it’s growing.
African Violets- The beautiful purple blooms of the African violet are a great option for those who prefer flowering houseplants. They like filtered bright sun and need soil that never dries out or is sopping wet. Finding the right balance is the best way to help this plant thrive.
Air Plant- By far one of the easiest plants. These plants require occasional dunking baths in a bowl of water to survive. They don’t need soil and can be placed in any sort of open container.
Ogre’s Ear- This succulent is named for its uniquely shaped leaves that resemble the ear of a mythical ogre. This plant likes partial sun and about an inch of water every 3 weeks.
Aloe- The plant that is responsible for creating that healing gel that you use on sunburns can be grown inside easily! It likes soil that drains easily and to maintain a water level that never goes into the territory of overwatering. It can grow well outside in warm months but can get brown spots if placed in harsh sun.
Mother-in-Law’s Tongue- This plant is a classic that is beloved for more than its tongue-in-cheek name. It is tall and exotic looking and adds a great variation in shape to your plant collection. It thrives in low or high levels of light and does not require frequent watering.
Now that you have some basic plant knowledge, you can begin your path to plant parenthood and start growing your own collection of beautiful greenery in your own home. Happy growing and best wishes for prolific green thumb luck.
